Huge explosions again shook Gaza early on Thursday as Israeli planes bombed three government buildings and the parliament in Gaza City.

A children's hospital in Gaza City was also damaged by an airstrike and several children were injured.

The Israeli military continued to bomb tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border in an attempt to cut off Hamas' last lifeline to the world outside the embattled Palestinian territory.

Aircraft also went after Hamas police and their vehicles.

Meanwhile, an Arab sponsored resolution, demanding an end to Israeli air strikes on Gaza and opening up of all border crossing to alleviate the sufferings of Palestinians, failed to get support from most members of the Security

Council at an emergency meeting on New Year's Eve.

The draft resolution circulated by Libya on behalf of the 22-member Arab League on Wednesday night was supported by South Africa and Indonesia, both of whom retired a few hours later on completing their two-year term, whereas it was considered by the western nations to be unbalanced and one-sided.

US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad did not even mention it in his address to the Council during which he squarely blamed firing of rockets by Hamas into southern Israel for the deterioration of the situation and sufferings of the 1.5 million Palestinians.

Several members promised to consider the draft carefully which means that they expect to open negotiation to bring about changes in the text. That process could take several days.

Council diplomats say the vote is unlikely to take place before the visit of Arab ministerial delegation to the United Nations next week. (With PTI inputs)
